November 21st: From the Depths / Renewal / Dirty Lickins

From the Depths

FROM THE DEPTHS (North Carolina) – http://fromthedepths.info

A couple of the survivors of Requiem—not to mention other bands such as Intense Youth, Auryn, Balaclava, Network of Terror, and Catharsis—are in a new band now, From the Depths.

Hearkening back to the days when anarcho-punk was characterized by bands as diverse as Crass, Chumbawumba, and Contropotere, the songs on this album combine d-beat power, slower and faster hardcore, harsh noise, and even a passage from a traditional Italian anarchist folk ballad. This is intense, defiant, dark music, but it is based in compelling melodies; you can scream these songs at the top of your lungs in a riot, but you could also sing them quietly to yourself in jail to maintain your spirits.

joining them will be…

RENEWAL (Peterbough) – Hardcore Punk

September 19th: Trash on Wheels Film Party

Trashonwheels

Trash Palace – “Toronto’s Classiest Cinema” – is proud to present THE TRASH ON WHEELS FILM PARTY – a back-to-school touring show of classroom films, cartoons and more from the files of Canada’s most demented film fanatics!

Hosted by Trash Palace programmer Jonathan Culp, TRASH ON WHEELS brings a full evening of lost, forgotten and undiscovered gems from the celluloid dumpsters of our nation to your town. Armed with their trusty 16mm film projector, a trunkload of film reels from the 60s and 70s, cold drinks, and a fully stocked snack bar (including handmade vegan truffles from Boardwalk Chocolates!) Trash Palace will give you a taste of the madness that we’ve been dishing out at our home base for over two years.

With a constantly changing lineup of titles – partially selected by the audience via the “Trash Palace Applause-O-Meter” – every screening is a whole new ballgame. Will you see angry puppets smacking around their friends? Evil dancing cigarettes? Washed up pop stars ranting about LSD? Christian college students partying with the Virgin Mary? Animated sex ed lessons? Or masked headmasters wielding lawnmowers?

This is no stinkin’ film festival – it’s THE TRASH ON WHEELS FILM PARTY!

TRASH PALACE, named “the 11th best place to watch a film in Toronto” by BlogTO, shows shorts and features every Friday at their secret location. The Toronto Star writes, “It lives up to its seamy potential…the fun is pure, untainted by cynicism, high expectations or irony.” And the National Post observes, “Trash Palace’s screenings promise the best in films that somebody out there was desperate to get rid of.” Check them out at http://www.trashpalace.ca.

January 17th: Maccabees Stand with Gaza

maccabeesstandwgaza

On January 17, 2009, the AKA Autonomous Social Centre presents “Maccabees Stand with Gaza” – a dance show and fundraiser to support the efforts of Anarchists Against the Wall.

DJ Grenadier will be playing a mix of klezmer funk, semitic soul, and intifada hip-hop.

As the massacre on Gaza and the dehumanizing Occupation of the West Bank continues, we stand in solidarity with those resisting colonial power. Through direct action and support of the Palestinian led popular non violent resistance movement, Anarchists Against the Wall (AATW) are working to stop construction of Israel’s “Separation Wall,” a key element of the ongoing dispossession and genocide of the Palestinian people.

All funds from Maccabees Stand with Gaza go to the cross-Turtle Island AATW fundraising tour which stops at the AKA Autonomous Social Centre in Kingston on February 23, 2008. Shachaf Polokow will facilitate a workshop about the Israeli anarchist movement and solidarity with Palestinians. Resistance to the Wall has been met with severe (and sometimes lethal) violence and repression from the Israeli state, especially against Palestinian demonstrators. Money from the tour will be go toward legal fees for Palestinians and Israelis arrested or detained at actions against the Occupation.

$5-15 (No one turned away)
All Ages/19+
9pm-10pm: Downtempo dabkets and info session
10pm-2am: Dance-heavy horas

Stay tuned to radio613 in upcoming weeks for interviews with members of Anarchists Against the Wall.
