Permaculture and the Post-Capitalist Economy
A Workshop and Skill-Share with Mighk from Victoria
Thursday, December 10th, 2009, 4pm-7pm
AKA Autonomous Social Centre (75 Queen St.)

Join Mighk for a workshop about permaculture food systems and forest gardens in both urban and rural sites of the pacific northwest bioregion.

There will be a brief introduction to the concept of permaculture, slides of various autonomous spaces, collectives, and forest gardens that are adopting permaculture principles in ways that challenge capitalist and authoritarian relations. Finally, there will be a skillshare, where folks can get their hands dirty and try guerilla grafting… Bring a pocket knife for this segment if you have one!

Mighk lives at the Bullock’s Permaculture Homestead on Orcas Island, Washington. Next year he will help teach the Permaculture Design Course at Linnaea Farm on Cortes Island, BC.  He is a co-founder of the Camas Infoshop in Victoria BC.

February 23rd: Anarchists Against the Wall

AKA Autonomous Social Centre presents:

Resisting the Wall: The Israeli Anarchist Movement
Monday, February 23rd, 2009 at 7:30PM
AKA Autonomous Social Centre (75 Queen Street)

Featuring a talk and discussion with Schachaf Pokolow, a member of Anarchists Against the Wall. The event will include film and photos and will focus both on AATW’s recent work in solidarity with Gaza and the ongoing struggle in the West Bank.

Suggested donation: $5-$15 (no one turned away) * All donations collected will go towards supporting the legal fund of Anarchists Against the Wall, as well as to the struggle against the Apartheid Wall in the Palestinian village of Nil’in.

Anarchists Against the Wall (www.awalls.org) is a direct action group that fights against Israeli apartheid and oppression in all its forms, most recently also the atrocities in Gaza. For five years the group has waged a constant struggle against Israel’s Wall. The work on the ground in the West Bank, alongside the Palestinian popular movement is breaking new ground in the joint struggle for Palestinian liberation. In December 2008, Anarchists Against the Wall and the Bil’in Village Committee were jointly awarded the prestigious Carl von Ossietzky Medal—an award given annually by the Berlin-based International League of Human Rights, named after German Nobel Peace Prize winner Carl von Ossietzky who died in a Nazi concentration camp. Now more than ever, it is critical to support the Israeli resistance movement against the state’s attempted repression of their work. Members of Anarchists Against the Wall continually pay the price for our activism, including being shot, beaten, arrested and indicted. They desperately need funding for legal support for both Palestinian and Israeli activists who are arrested and charged in the course of the struggle. *

About Schachaf Polakow : Schachaf Polakow is an Israeli actvist, street medic, photographer with the ActiveStills collective (www.activestills.org) and a member of Anarchists Against the Wall. He will be touring the U.S. and Canada from February 1st to March 9th. His presentation will include film and photos, and will focus both on AATW’s recent work in solidarity with Gaza and our ongoing work in the West Bank.

December 13th: Solidarity and Struggle with the Mohawks of Tyendinaga

december-13th-event1

December 13, 2008 @ 7:00pm
AKA Autonomous Social Centre – 75 Queen Street

The Tyendinaga Mohawks of the Ridge Road Longhouse have been struggling for stolen land, clean water and political and economic autonomy for years. Recently, they stopped a new police station sponsored by the Canadian government from being built without consent, consultation or proper discussion of funding priorities for the community as a whole. Over a dozen people involved in this action have been charged and are facing arrest right now.

In solidarity with this inspiring movement, people in Guelph shut down a major intersection and set up a spontaneous blockade on November 10, 2008. (See bottom for links to more info). This action resulted in several arrests for mischief, arson and other serious charges.

On December 13, 2008, the AKA Autonomous Social Centre and the Kingston Indigenous Solidarity Network invite you to come learn about the struggle in Tyendinaga and how they relate to Guelph, Kingston and beyond. A Mohawk Warrior from Tyendinaga will be speaking, as well as solidarity organizers from Guelph and Kingston at 7:00pm at 75 Queen Street in Kingston, Ontario. Everyone is welcome, and admission is free.
