December 13th: Solidarity and Struggle with the Mohawks of Tyendinaga

december-13th-event1

December 13, 2008 @ 7:00pm
AKA Autonomous Social Centre – 75 Queen Street

The Tyendinaga Mohawks of the Ridge Road Longhouse have been struggling for stolen land, clean water and political and economic autonomy for years. Recently, they stopped a new police station sponsored by the Canadian government from being built without consent, consultation or proper discussion of funding priorities for the community as a whole. Over a dozen people involved in this action have been charged and are facing arrest right now.

In solidarity with this inspiring movement, people in Guelph shut down a major intersection and set up a spontaneous blockade on November 10, 2008. (See bottom for links to more info). This action resulted in several arrests for mischief, arson and other serious charges.

On December 13, 2008, the AKA Autonomous Social Centre and the Kingston Indigenous Solidarity Network invite you to come learn about the struggle in Tyendinaga and how they relate to Guelph, Kingston and beyond. A Mohawk Warrior from Tyendinaga will be speaking, as well as solidarity organizers from Guelph and Kingston at 7:00pm at 75 Queen Street in Kingston, Ontario. Everyone is welcome, and admission is free.

About Shift in Progress:

Shift in Progress is a publication of the Edmonton branch of the Industrial workers of the World and collaboration of artists and workers, based on interviews with five young workers, detailing the oppression they face in the workplace and their struggles to transform it.

The goals of the “Not-So-Comic Book” project were: to empower young people to tell their stories about their workplace experiences, to create a common story that speaks directly to the community through an art form that is current and relevant to them, and to enable the community to make its voice heard in a broader context.
